Great results at USODA Team Trials

The team as a whole had great results at the 2013 USODA Team Trials at Pewaukee Yacht Club. 195 Optis showed up for a primarily light air event. Being on a lake lead to some interesting shifts and puffs. Consistency and not taking too many risks were the keys to putting together a good score line. Pewaukee YC was a wonderful host and the Race Committee, led by Anderson Reggio, did a great job getting 11 races in.

Team highlights were

– JC Hermus 4th overall

– 3 sailors in Top 15

– 1st and 2nd Blue Fleet

– 5 Sailors in Top 50

– 4 of Top 10 White Fleet

– 12 Sailors in Top 100

SailStrong Team Members will represent the USA at numerous international regattas this summer.

World Championship Team  – JC Hermus

European Championship Team – Kathryn Hall

North American Championship Team – Clayton Johnson, Thomas Rice, Michelle Lahrkamp

USODA Team Trials Practice

23 SailStrong Opti sailors are in Pewaukee, Wisconsin getting ready for this weekend’s USODA Team Trials. They have had 2 great days of practice so far, plus one day of no wind in which they worked on all their sail and boat measurements done, as well as registration. The kids have done a great job trying to figure out the lake sailing shifty conditions and are feeling good about their preparation. Two more days of practice and then the racing begins.

Lots of overseas success and fun for SailStrong this Spring

SailStrong sailors traveled to Lake Garda Italy, Lake Braassermeer Holland, and Porto Alegre Brazil over Easter week. Great experiences and racing were had by all.

Thomas Rice and JC Hermus were part of the US Team attending the IODA South American Championship in Brazil. Thomas ended up 12th and JC 17th of the 145 boats. JC was part of USA 2, which won the Nations Cup Team Race. Thomas was on USA 3, which narrowly lost to USA 1 in a race for the finals and ended up 3rd.

Four sailors travelled to Lake Garda, Italy for the Lake Garda Meeting, which for the second year in a row set a Guinness Book Record for the largest one-design regatta ever with over 1,400 Optis taking part. The event was split into the Cadetti Division (11 and under) and the Juniores Division (12 and up). In the 300 boat Cadetti Division Maddie Hawkins ended up 13th and second girl, and Madeleine Rice 31st. The much larger Juniores Division was split into 5 groups 250+ boats and after three days of qualifying Jake Vickers and Stephanie Houck ended up 11th and 77th in Bronze Fleet.

Four more SailStrong team members headed to Holland for the 200+ boat Magic Marine Easter Regatta . Jordan and Sam Bruce qualified for the Gold Fleet with Jordan ending up 26th and Sam 57th. Thomas Hall finished 37th in Silver Fleet and Brendan Little 20th in Bronze Fleet.

Good luck to all our sailors heading overseas this week and next.

We want to wish good luck to all our sailors heading to international optimist regattas with Team USA this week and next.

Valentine’s Day Regatta

Solid regatta by the team at Valentine’s Day this weekend. After some windy sailing on the practice Thursday and Friday, the breeze disappeared just in time for the weekend. The RC worked hard to get 4 races in over the two days, which led to some tough results if you had a Black Flag. We had one of the biggest groups with 23 sailors. Congrats to Hannah Steadman, who led the team with her 8th place finish overall, and also to Nick Chisari and Max Mayol for qualifying for Team Trials. Thomas Rice also sailed a fantastic regatta with 3 bullets and a 5th. Too bad one of the firsts he was over early, but some great sailing nevertheless.

Team Results:
Hannah Steadman 8th Overall, 7th Red
Thomas Rice 35th
Lawson Levine 38th
Madeleine Rice 50th, 5th White
Sam Bruce 53rd, 6th White
Michelle Lahrkamp 56th
Jake Vickers 60th
Nick Chisari 65th
Maddie Hawkins 70th, 8th White
Jordan Bruce 80th
Kimmie Leonard 82nd
Harrison Menszer 88th
Reed Menszer 92nd
Sloane Kratzman 94th
Michael Pinto 98th
Chapman Petersen 100th
Ellie Menszer 163rd
Torrey Chisari 182nd

Nice Job everyone! Continued improvement from the whole team.

USODA Team Race Midwinters

Another great weekend in Jensen Beach. 21 teams showed up for Team Race Midwinters this year and the weather provided great conditions for the first two days, if a little wet from some showers. Day one and part of day two was used for qualifying races and then the teams were split into Gold and Silver Fleets. SailStrong Red made the Gold Alpha Group, while the White and Blue Team were in Gold Bravo. SailStrong Purple just missed gold after some good racing for the young and inexperienced team. After the second day Red was in 3rd, White 12th, Blue 14th, and Purple 4th in Silver.

Unfortunately the wind was light on the third and last day of the regatta and the Race Committee was not able to get enough races in to finish the next round, therefore the results reverted back to the end of the previous round. We had a good practice day but no results.

Congrats to the Red team for the podium finish, after coming up just short in 4th at Team Race Nationals. All the teams learned a lot are looking forward to preparing for Nationals.

US Sailing Center – Martin County puts on another great Junior Olympic Regatta

The team traveled to Jensen Beach, FL for the US Sailing Junior Olympic Festival at the US Sailing Center – Martin County. 110 RWB Optis, 75 Green Fleet Optis, 420s, Open Bics, and a couple windsurfing fleets were all on the water together. It was very cool to see such a diverse fleet out sailing on the Indian River.

We had 11 sailors in  Red, White, and Blue Opti Fleet with Thomas Rice leading the way on the final scores in 5th Place overall. The Florida local Opti regattas are always a tough fleet and with our group and a big group from the Virgin Islands mixed in, this was a really good year for this event. Last year we only had 3 sailors, but the word is spreading that this is an event to put on your winter sailing calendar.

The rest of the team had a great showing as well with 5 in the top 25 and 6 in the top 30. In White Fleet we were 1st, 2nd, 4th, and 6th. A highlight for the team had to be the last race of the regatta where we had the 1st, 5th, 6th, and 9th place boats.

Looking forward to coming back next year.

4 Sailors Qualify for Lake Garda Meeting – 12 Sailors total to International Regattas

Madeleine Rice, Maddie Hawkins, Stephanie Houck, and Jake Vickers have qualified for the US team heading to the Lake Garda next spring for one of the largest (800+ optis) regattas in the world.

That brings to a total of 12 the number of SailStrong members heading to international regattas for Team USA next spring. Keep up the hard work so you are ready when you get there.
