USODA South East Championship

We finally got on the water for our first regatta October 9-11 in Marco Island, FL for the South East Champs, this years qualifier for the USODA spring international teams and what a way to start. JC Hermus finished 10th overall and 6th in Blue Fleet. Our second sailor in the top 25 was Nick Brady at 24. We also had 5 others in the top 100 (Chrissie Klingler 56, Mehvish Khan 62, Gray Benson 65, Antonia Bentel 72, and Thomas Rice 98). Some of our younger sailors showed great improvement from Nationals, even in the big breeze on the first day. Not everyone reached their goals but as a team I was very proud of how well everyone sailed and the effort they put in. Back to practicing this week and a few smaller regattas coming up, then the busy winter schedule and time to start the long preparation for Team Trials.

Unfortunately the USODA Atlantic Coast Champs had no wind and we were not able to get any racing in. Friday we had a great practice and a few of the kids sailing very fast in races against some other good sailors. Saturday and Sunday is pretty much summed up in the picture here, a lot of relaxing mixed with games that I don’t understand like Ninja and Mafia, which seem to be mostly controlled violence. It was easier for the kids to fill their time than the coaches and adults. Back to practicing next week and South East champs the following weekend in Naples, Florida. I suspect we will have our first results after that event but you never know. Maybe we’ll get skunked again.
